Vanessa started dental nursing in 1987 she gained her NEBDN national certificate in 2002. In the same year she undertook her formal training in Conscious Sedation (NEBDN Sed cert) qualifying in 2003 and enjoyed working in practice until 2005.

After spending time at home with her young family Vanessa changed direction and undertook her training to become a dental nurse assessor gaining her A1 award in 2009. As an adjunct to her training Vanessa also undertook a level 3 qualification in health and social care which has helped her wider understanding of non clinical requirements, CQC and safeguarding regulations. Vanessa has completed a level 5  Diploma in Management and Leadership and is registered with the ILM. Currently her main role is practice manager for Portman Healthcare - Whitby Dental. Alongside these duties she is a trainer with Mellow Sedation Training Courses.

Dr Carol Dewhurst

Dr Carol Dewhurst qualified from Liverpool University in 1981. After working at the Liverpool Dental Hospital she went to general dental practice on the Wirral.  She has been at Whitby Dental Practice since 1986. She was awarded the DGP(UK) in 1992 and the MFGDP in 1994. After a four year degree course in restorative dentistry at Guys, Kings, and St Thomas Hospitals in London, she obtained her Masters degree in clinical dentistry in 2002, specialising in fixed and removable prosthodontics.

She has 19 years teaching experience in restorative dentistry at the Liverpool Dental School, which together with her post graduate degrees, have kept her at the cutting edge of technology and contemporary techniques.Dr Dewhurst also has a very keen interest in cosmetic dentistry and smile design.

Mike graduated with honours from the Liverpool University Dental School in 2009 with several prizes including the University Prize in Dental Surgery for finishing top of his year. He enjoys all aspects of dentistry and has undertaken hospitals posts in general duties and restorative dentistry as well as general practice and has published papers in a number of fields. His main focus has always been in restorative dentistry and in particular endodontics and he was appointed Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at Liverpool University Dental Hospital in April 2013 and then as a Speciality Registrar in Endodontics in September 2014. This year he has completed his final year of specialist training, sedation training and his studies for a doctorate, researching CBCT in difficult endodontic cases.

In addition to his training Mike spends much of his time teaching undergraduates, dental core trainees and generalists as well as giving presentations and lectures at local, regional and national events. This year he ran two well received workshops at the BDA conference on simplifying endodontic treatment for the general dentist and lectured on post endodontic restorations at the My Dentist conference in Birmingham.

Mike has been part of the team at Whitby Dental for the past two years, undertaking in house referrals for endodontics as well as small amount of external referral work. He is now keen to invite referrals from external referring dentists and is happy to offer advice on endodontic cases. He accepts referrals for all aspects of endodontic treatment, including diagnosis, primary RCT, re-treatment cases, removal of posts and instruments, perforation repair, open apex/trauma cases and endodontic surgery including apical surgery and surgical repair of resorption defects. He also maintains an interest in the restorative aspects of endodontically treated teeth and can provide post, cores and indirect restorations upon request.

Adrian Bennett

Adrian qualified from the University of Bristol in 2000 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery winning awards in Oral Surgery, Prosthodontics and Oral MedicineHe was awarded a Master of Philosophy degree (MPhil) in 2004 from the University of Manchester for research into tooth coloured filling materials.In 2010 he was awarded the Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MJDF RCS Eng)

In 2015 he has been awarded a Master Degree (MSc) with Distinction in Orthodontics from the University of Warwick

He has a Special Interest in Orthodontics and is a member of the British Orthodontic Society. He has worked almost exclusively with the Damon Braces system for over ten years and accepts referrals for children and adults and is able to treat complex cases e.g. Impacted canines and cases requiring additional restorative and/ or implants etc.

Adrian is also Director of the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s Faculty of General Dental Practice’s NW-division.Adrian is an Honorary Teaching Fellow at the University of Warwick and supervises MSc students.

Roy qualified from Liverpool University in 1987.  His career has focused on aesthetic dentistry & sedation techniques. He completed postgraduate training in Conscious Sedation (2002) and then MFGDP(UK) 2006 and a Diploma in Dental Science (2008). He is an accredited IACSD course organiser & teacher in clinical sedation with over 20 years experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He is a member and mentor of both the Dental Sedation Teacher Group (DSTG) and SAAD. He frequently helps local colleagues by accepting sedation  referrals and supporting other dental practices in the North West.

Roy is also Clinical Lead for North at Portman Health Care and Director of Mellow Sedation Training Services.

Following graduation in 1993, Bob worked as a House Officer at Dundee Dental Hospital. He then joined the Royal Air Force and served from 1995 to 2000 as a Dental Officer, rising to the rank of Squadron Leader. Bob left the RAF in 2000, accepting an offer to join the renowned Carisbooke Dental Practice and Implant Centre in Leicester. He then moved to Manchester in 2003, to begin work at St Ann’s Dental Clinic, while studying for his Restorative Masters Degree at the University of Leeds.

His main interests are in cosmetic and advanced restorative treatments. Bob continues his own professional development taking courses around the world and is a member of multiple dental societies in America, Europe and the UK. He has a special interest in advancing his extensive knowledge of jaw joint disorders and occlusion. bob has lectured nationally on the subjects of Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. Together with Dr. Richard Brookshaw, Bob co-directs the Centre for Advanced Dental Education providing postgraduate courses for fellow dentists.

Pdc0164 Whitby Steve Kelso

Dr Kelso qualified from Queen's University, Belfast, in 1997. He completed vocational training in Belfast before undertaking oral surgery experience at University Hospital, Aintree, Liverpool, and later on a part-time basis as a Hospital Practitioner in the oral surgery department at the Liverpool University Dental Hospital.

During this time, he gained his MFDS qualification and now practices solely within the General Dental Services with a special interest in oral surgery and implantology.

Dr Kelso has been trained to use several implant systems and currently favours the Straumann dental implant system. He is a mentor for Straumann training and keeps abreast of new and evidence based techniques both nationally and internationally. He has recently returned from the International Straumann Symposia in Switzerland and the USA

Dr Kelso has a keen interest in outdoor pursuits, plays hockey and has represented Ireland in this field.

Dr Emma Varga

Dr Varga has both worked and taught at the Liverpool Dental school for many years, and is on the specialist list for oral surgery. We like to provide a holistic complete dental service and an internal referral to Dr Varga prevents our patients waiting too long on hospital lists for their treatment.

We can also guarantee an expert but sensitive and caring approach with a known team to anyone needing surgical care.  To complete our care, she is also qualified in medical hypnosis.
